History

The M1895 Nagant revolver, often simply referred to as the Nagant, is a significant piece of firearms history, particularly in the context of World War II and Soviet military history. Designed by the Belgian engineer Léon Nagant, this revolver was adopted by the Russian Empire in 1895 and remained in service through various conflicts, including World War II.

Design and Features

The Nagant revolver is notable for its unique design, which includes a gas-seal mechanism. This feature allows the revolver to achieve higher muzzle velocity and greater accuracy by sealing the cylinder to the barrel during firing. The revolver is chambered for the 7.62×38mmR cartridge, which is distinctive for its elongated shape and was specifically designed for this firearm.

  • Caliber: 7.62×38mmR
  • Capacity: 7-round cylinder
  • Operation: Double-action/single-action
  • Weight: Approximately 1.5 pounds (0.68 kg)

By the time World War II began, the Nagant had already been in service for over four decades. It was utilized by both the Imperial Russian Army and later the Soviet Red Army. During the early years of the war, the Nagant revolver was widely used by Soviet officers and various military personnel, especially when other firearms were scarce.

Role in World War II

During World War II, the Nagant revolver served as a secondary weapon for officers, non-commissioned officers, and specialized troops. Its reliability and simplicity made it a favored choice, particularly in close-quarters combat situations. While the Soviets began to favor semi-automatic pistols like the Tokarev TT-33 later in the war, the Nagant remained a prevalent sidearm.

  • Usage: The Nagant was often issued to tank crews, paratroopers, and those in the rear echelons. Its compact design made it a suitable weapon for confined spaces.
  • Adaptability: The revolver was also used in a variety of roles beyond frontline combat, including as a personal defense weapon for officers and political commissars.
