Description
This is a "Very Rare" Short Barrel/Carbine: While the standard rifle is long, Finnish-captured SVTs often featured in 1941 include the 7-hole or 8-hole upper handguard. Some, though rarer, were true carbine variants with a 6-inch shorter barrel.
This Original Russian Capture Finnish Izhevsk 1941 SVT-40 Semi-Automatic “Carbine” Rifle chambered in 7.62x54R, manufactured at the famed Izhevsk Arsenal in 1941 during the height of the Second World War. The SVT-40 (Samozaryadnaya Vintovka Tokareva) was designed by Fedor Tokarev as the Soviet Union’s answer to modern semi-automatic battle rifles and saw extensive combat service on the Eastern Front throughout World War II.
This excellent-condition example is a highly desirable Finnish Capture rifle, identified by the distinctive boxed “SA” property marking applied by the Finnish Army after capture during the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. Finnish-captured SVT-40 rifles are especially sought after by collectors due to their combat history, limited survival rate, and documented wartime use by Finnish troops.
Manufactured at the Izhevsk Arsenal in 1941, this rifle features the rugged wartime machining and classic Tokarev design that made the SVT-40 one of the most advanced military rifles of its era. The rifle utilizes a gas-operated short-stroke piston system with a tilting bolt action and detachable 10-round magazine, offering rapid semi-automatic fire in the powerful 7.62x54R cartridge.
The metal finish on this example remains in excellent condition with sharp markings and strong wartime character throughout. The original hardwood stock displays attractive grain and honest service wear consistent with wartime Finnish use. The receiver bears the correct 1941 Izhevsk arsenal markings along with Finnish “SA” capture stamps, adding significant collector appeal and historical authenticity.
The SVT-40 was often referred to by soldiers and collectors as a lightweight semi-automatic “carbine” due to its slimmer profile and improved handling compared to traditional full-length battle rifles of the era. With an overall length of approximately 48 inches and weighing roughly 8.5 pounds unloaded, the rifle offered excellent firepower and maneuverability on the battlefield.
Finnish Capture SVT-40 rifles represent an important chapter of Eastern Front history, as thousands of Tokarev rifles were captured by Finnish forces and reissued for combat service against their former Soviet owners. These rifles became prized battlefield trophies and remain among the most collectible variants of the Tokarev series today.
A scarce and historically significant World War II semi-automatic rifle that would make an outstanding addition to any advanced Soviet, Finnish, or WWII military firearms collection.
