Description

This rare original large and impressive badge issued to commemorate the Inauguration of the SA Memorial (SA Ehrenmal) of Gruppe Mitte in Magdeburg on 23rd February 1936 for the dedication of the SA Memorial of Gruppe Mitte in Magdeburg on 23rd February 1936.

The badge is cast in hollow-backed brass with a bronze-gilt finish. It is a high-relief cast and is provided with a horizontal pin-back. The reverse is smooth and unmarked, as one would expect with a genuine period example. The badge is a large 52mm in diameter and is of a size that it shows to great effect in any high-quality collection of Third Reich political badges, tinnies, etc., and pre-war German military artifacts.

The obverse is a dramatic, high-relief sculpture of a scene depicting the SA and the honoring of the SA and the SA-Memorial in Magdeburg at the time of the inauguration of the SA-Memorial of Gruppe Mitte, surrounded by period text stating the date and nature of the event of the inauguration of the SA-Memorial. The badge is hollow backed, making it possible to cast the high relief in heavy metal, yet remaining relatively light.

All of the high-relief detail is still very much visible, and the entire piece has a wonderful feel to it. The pin assembly is still good and sturdy, and the reverse shows only the barest hints of age, having been very well looked after for the last 90 or so years.
