Description

This Original German Military Rifle Mod. 98/Karabiner 98k ‘dot’ code 1944 model is in excellent condition for a 70-year-old firearm, extremely high-quality example of a late war German service rifle brought back to the USA as a WWII war trophy/souvenir. This rifle has a matching number 'duffle-cut' stock, extremely high-quality example of a late war German service rifle.

“dot” Manufacturer Code

Dot "Dot" code used by Waffenwerke Brünn A.G., Werk II, Považská Bystrica, during WWII. The Považská Bystrica factory was operated under German control. This is a late-war German service rifle, brought back to the USA after the war. Note that the receiver bears the "dot" code

Late-war German arms production had focused on speed and efficiency. Most rifles, including this Mod. 98, had gone through various manufacturing shortcuts. These rifles also displayed simplified finishing touches.

Matching-Number Example

This Mod. 98 bolt-action military rifle is an excellent example of a late-war German service rifle, which was subsequently brought home to the United States as a wartime souvenir. The best feature of this excellent WWII German military rifle is its matching-number configuration.

Carefully inspect the receiver serial number against each of the numbered components and determine the degree of originality of this exceptionally fine WW2 German Military Service Rifle. All the typical original German Military Service Rifle markings including the rifle’s serial number, are stamped into the receiver and various parts of the rifle.

Period Duffle-Cut Stock

The stock of this rifle has been “duffle cut” below the barrel. This type of cut was made by military personnel in Europe during WWII in order to enable them to bring back larger numbers of rifles in their duffle bags and other containers. Most of the bring back rifles that have been found to have been duffle cut, have had the cut area “covered up” with “farming” type patches and other items so as to enable the owner to be able to display his bring back rifle in its full military configuration.

The duffle cut is sometimes considered to be an alteration to a rifle’s original configuration. However, such a modification can be of great historical interest and will often remain concealed when the rifle is completely assembled and the action is closed.

The duffle cut is a very interesting feature to this rifle. It gives the impression of a bring back rifle that was left in the arsenal and did not go through the normal parts mixing that occurred to try to get all of the rifles in working order.

Historical Significance

The German Mod. 98/Karabiner 98k family of rifles were the culmination of decades of development by Mauser of bolt-action rifles and were used as the main service-rifle of the German armed forces throughout WWII. They were chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge.

The “dot” rifle from 1944 is from the final stages of the war, when the German arms industry was under extreme pressure. These rifles, in terms of their manufacturing, choice of components, markings and finish, show a transition from the high quality rifles of the prewar and early war period to the simplified production methods of the later war years.

Condition

The metal is in excellent condition with the expected wear for a military arm of this age. The wood is also in excellent condition with the expected wear and storage marks from the rifle having been stored in a duffle bag.

Note that the duffle cut in this rifle has been there for many decades and, therefore, is part of the collectible history of a bring-back firearm. The German markings, numbered parts, the 1944 date and the “dot” manufacturer code all make this an especially attractive WWII German firearm for the advanced collector.

Collector Highlights

  • Original WWII German military rifle
  • 1944 dated
  • Desirable “dot” manufacturer code
  • Manufactured under the German wartime arms-production system
  • Matching-number configuration
  • Original military stock

  • Classic WWII German Mauser-pattern bolt-action rifle
  • Chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge
  • Strong surviving wartime markings
  • Excellent overall condition
  • Excellent display and historical-collection piece

The bring-back duffle-cut stock adds another dimension of historical interest to this late-war German “dot” maker’s Mod. 98, bringing it back to the USA from wartime Europe. And while that duffle-cut stock is an older modification to the military stock, it in no way diminishes the interest of this highly sought-after German WWII rifle for the serious collector of small arms from WWII Germany, Mauser rifles, or veteran bring-backs.

A highly desirable example for a serious collection of WWII German small arms, Mauser rifles, veteran bring-backs, or late-war German military firearms.
