Description
This German Wehrmacht Iron Cross 2nd Class 1939 Prinzen Size Spange is an original Third Reich period miniature award device worn on ribbon bars by German military personnel during the Second World War. The Prinzen size version was a smaller, privately-purchased variant intended for wear on dress uniforms, formal occasions, or ribbon bars, rather than the full-size decoration.
The Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse) 1939 was instituted by Adolf Hitler on September 1, 1939, at the beginning of World War II, and was awarded for acts of bravery in combat as well as other military merit in the face of the enemy. Soldiers who had previously received the 1914 Iron Cross were awarded a 1939 Spange, while others received the 1939 class decoration itself. Miniature and Prinzen-size awards such as this example were commonly worn by officers and decorated veterans on parade uniforms, tunics, and ribbon bars.
This example is the Prinzen size Spange version, finely detailed with the correct 1939 style Iron Cross design featuring the swastika to the center and the 1939 date to the lower arm. The reverse retains the correct style attachment for mounting to a ribbon bar or medal bar.
The finish shows normal age and honest wear consistent with wartime manufacture, with good detail remaining throughout. These miniature spangen were often privately purchased and produced in smaller numbers than standard awards, making them desirable to collectors of German WWII awards and insignia.
Condition: Very good condition with light wear from age and use. Finish remains strong with clear details. Attachment intact.
