Description
This original World War II Imperial Japanese Arisaka Type 99 bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.7×58mm Japanese, manufactured by the Nagoya Army Arsenal for service with the Imperial Japanese Army. This is an authentic wartime example of one of Japan’s principal infantry rifles of the Pacific War and remains in very good overall condition.
The Type 99 Arisaka was adopted in 1939 as Japan transitioned from the earlier 6.5mm Type 38 cartridge to the more powerful 7.7mm service cartridge. Production was undertaken by several Japanese arsenals and contractors, with Nagoya Arsenal becoming one of the most important producers of the Type 99 during World War II.
This example displays the characteristic Type 99 configuration, including its strong Mauser-influenced bolt-action system, internal five-round magazine, protected front sight, military rear sight, and full-length hardwood stock. Nagoya-produced rifles are identifiable by their arsenal markings and series markings on the receiver, which can assist in determining the approximate production period and original configuration.
The Type 99 is particularly interesting to collectors because production characteristics evolved considerably as the Pacific War progressed. Earlier rifles were generally manufactured with a higher level of finish and could incorporate features such as an anti-aircraft rear sight, monopod, and chrome-lined bore, while later rifles were progressively simplified as wartime shortages intensified. These variations make arsenal, series, serial-number range, and individual component markings important considerations when evaluating an original Type 99.
The rifle remains in very good condition for an original wartime Japanese service arm, showing the expected age and service-related character consistent with an authentic military rifle that has survived more than eight decades. The combination of its Nagoya Arsenal manufacture, original Imperial Japanese military configuration, and desirable 7.7mm Type 99 pattern makes it an excellent representative example for a serious WWII or Japanese militaria collection.
Historical Significance
The Arisaka Type 99 saw extensive service with Japanese forces throughout the Pacific and Asian theaters of World War II, including campaigns across China, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, New Guinea, and numerous Pacific islands. Large numbers were subsequently brought back to the United States by returning American servicemen, making surviving examples an important part of both Japanese and American WWII collecting history.
