Description
This original Third-Reich-era Cross of Honor of the German Mother, 3rd Class in Bronze (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter), complete with its original neck ribbon and presentation case. Commonly referred to by collectors as the Mother’s Cross (Mutterkreuz), this example remains in near mint condition and presents exceptionally well as a complete set.
The Cross of Honor of the German Mother was instituted on December 16, 1938 and was awarded to German mothers under the National Socialist government according to a three-grade system. The Bronze 3rd Class was associated with mothers of four or five children, while Silver and Gold grades represented larger families.
Design & Construction
The decoration features the distinctive elongated cross design with blue enamel arms bordered in white enamel and bronze-colored metal edges. At the center is a circular white enamel field containing a black swastika surrounded by the inscription “DER DEUTSCHEN MUTTER” (“To the German Mother”).
The reverse bears the traditional inscription “16. Dezember 1938”, commemorating the date the award was instituted, together with a facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler.
This example retains its original blue-and-white striped neck ribbon, designed so the cross could be worn suspended around the recipient’s neck. Also included is its original fitted presentation case, making this a particularly attractive and complete surviving example.
Condition
The cross is in near mint condition, displaying excellent enamel with strong original coloration and crisp details. The bronze-colored surfaces remain exceptionally well preserved with only minimal evidence of age or handling. The ribbon is likewise very well preserved, and the accompanying case adds significantly to the completeness and display appeal of the set.
Complete Mother’s Cross sets retaining the decoration, original ribbon, and presentation case are increasingly desirable among collectors of original German awards and decorations.
