History
The M1 Carbine was developed in the early 1940s to provide U.S. troops with a lightweight, easy-to-handle firearm. It was intended to replace heavier and less versatile All_weapons like the M1911 pistol and to supplement the M1 Garand rifle for troops who were not front-line combat soldiers, such as paratroopers, engineers, and support units. The Inland Division of General Motors was a primary contractor, producing more than 2.6 million M1 Carbines during the war. Inland also developed the M1A1 Carbine, featuring a folding stock for airborne troops.
