Description
This official flag of the United States Marine Corps is traditionally referred to as the Marine Corps Standard, or battle color, and represents the history, traditions, and fighting heritage of the Corps.
The earliest flags carried by American Marines are not completely documented. It is generally believed that Captain Samuel Nicholas, regarded as the first commissioned officer of the Continental Marines, and his Marines carried the Grand Union Flag during the expedition against New Providence in the Bahamas in 1776. The famous Gadsden Flag, featuring the coiled rattlesnake and the motto “DON’T TREAD ON ME,” is also closely associated with the early Continental Marines.
Throughout the Revolutionary War and subsequent periods, Marine units carried a variety of colors and standards whose designs changed considerably over time. Eventually, the Marine Corps developed a distinctive standardized flag reflecting its own traditions and identity.
The modern Marine Corps Standard features a scarlet field with the official Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem rendered in gold and gray. The emblem consists of an eagle positioned above a globe resting upon a fouled anchor. The globe depicts the Western Hemisphere, recalling the Americas and the locations of many of the Marine Corps’ early military operations.
Scarlet and gold were officially designated as the colors of the Marine Corps in 1925, while the basic design of the modern Marine Corps flag was formally established in 1939.
Prominently incorporated into the emblem is a scroll bearing the celebrated Marine Corps motto:
SEMPER FIDELIS — “Always Faithful”
Often shortened to “Semper Fi,” the motto has represented the loyalty, commitment, and esprit de corps of generations of United States Marines.
