Description
Offered here is an original World War II-era U.S. Remington Model 03-A3 bolt-action rifle configured as a sniper rifle and fitted with a vintage Weaver Model 298 telescopic sight, presented in excellent overall condition. The Remington 03-A3 represents one of the final and most refined developments of the legendary U.S. Model 1903 Springfield rifle family and remains an important American military rifle from the Second World War.
Remington Model 03-A3
During WWII, the tremendous expansion of the United States Armed Forces created an urgent requirement for additional service rifles. Remington Arms began producing Model 1903 rifles and subsequently transitioned to the simplified Model 03-A3, commonly designated M1903A3.
The 03-A3 retained the proven Mauser-influenced turn-bolt action and .30-06 Springfield chambering of the earlier Model 1903 while incorporating manufacturing changes intended to increase production efficiency. One of its most recognizable improvements was the adoption of a receiver-mounted aperture rear sight, replacing the barrel-mounted sight arrangement found on earlier M1903 rifles.
The rifle features the classic military configuration associated with Remington 03-A3 production, including its full-length walnut stock, handguard, internal five-round magazine, manually operated bolt action, military furniture, and rugged steel construction.
Sniper Configuration & Weaver Model 298 Scope
What distinguishes this example is its sniper-style configuration with a vintage Weaver Model 298 telescopic sight. Period Weaver optics are closely associated with American sporting and military-style scoped rifles of the WWII era and provide this rifle with an especially impressive appearance.
The scope is mounted directly above the receiver and complements the long, streamlined profile of the 03-A3. Collectors should carefully examine the rifle's receiver markings, barrel date and manufacturer, stock markings, scope bases and rings, and any evidence of modification when determining whether a scoped 03-A3 represents a documented military configuration, period conversion, or later collector-built sniper configuration.
It is important to distinguish the standard M1903A3 from the purpose-built M1903A4 sniper rifle. Genuine WWII M1903A4 rifles were manufactured specifically for sniper use and incorporated identifiable production and marking characteristics. Accordingly, this rifle is described according to its observable Remington 03-A3 configuration and installed Weaver Model 298 scope; any specific claim of original U.S. military sniper issuance should be supported by the rifle's serial number, markings, mounting system, and provenance.
Condition
This example is in excellent overall condition, making it an attractive addition to an advanced U.S. military firearms collection. The rifle displays the distinctive lines of the 1903-series action combined with the appearance of a period scoped precision rifle.
The wood stock presents very well, while the metal components retain an attractive military appearance. The installed Weaver scope adds considerable visual character to the rifle and makes the complete assembly particularly well suited for a WWII U.S. Army small-arms or sniper-rifle display.
Historical Significance
The Model 1903 family served the United States through two World Wars and remained in service even after adoption of the semi-automatic M1 Garand. During WWII, 1903-series rifles continued to fill numerous combat, training, support, and specialized roles.
The dedicated M1903A4 became the best-known American sniper adaptation of the 1903-series rifle during WWII. Scoped 1903-pattern rifles therefore occupy an important place in the development of American military precision shooting and remain highly desirable among collectors.
