Description
Model 1853 U.S. Artillery Musketoon, 1853, Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts manufacturer, Caliber .69. Despite its innovative percussion lock, the Model 1847 retained a smooth bore. Even after the advantages of rifling had been demonstrated, many military leaders favored less accurate smooth bore All weapons because they could be loaded faster. The Model 1847 remained in production until 1859 and many saw service during the Civil War. This army model differs from navy models only in the iron band near the muzzle.
History
The Springfield Model 1853 was developed during a period of rapid military innovation leading up to and during the Civil War. The musketoon’s design was especially valuable to marines and artillery units as it offered the stopping power of a rifle-musket in a more manageable form. It was less common than the standard-issue infantry rifle-muskets, making it a specialized weapon with relatively limited distribution.
