Description:

Offered here is an original Vietnam War-era U.S. Army M1 Infantry Combat Helmet, complete with its Steinberg-manufactured liner and Mitchell-pattern camouflage helmet cover. An iconic piece of American field equipment, the M1 helmet became one of the most recognizable symbols of the U.S. serviceman during the Vietnam War.

M1 Steel Helmet

The M1 helmet consisted of a manganese steel outer shell and removable suspension liner, a design originally introduced during World War II and continually modified throughout the postwar period. Updated versions remained standard U.S. military issue throughout much of the Vietnam conflict.

The steel shell retains the classic M1 profile with its characteristic rolled rim and swivel-bale chinstrap attachments. During the Vietnam era, helmets were routinely worn with camouflage covers to reduce the visibility of the otherwise solid-colored steel shell and to provide additional field camouflage.

Steinberg Helmet Liner

This example retains an original Steinberg-manufactured M1 helmet liner. Vietnam-era liners were produced from molded laminated material and incorporated an adjustable web suspension system designed to comfortably support the steel shell while allowing the helmet to be individually fitted to the soldier.

The removable liner was an essential component of the M1 helmet system and could also be worn independently for certain duties.

Mitchell-Pattern Camouflage Cover

Completing the helmet is its desirable Mitchell-pattern camouflage cover, one of the most distinctive pieces of U.S. equipment associated with the Vietnam War.

The reversible Mitchell cover features two contrasting camouflage patterns: a green-dominant leaf pattern intended primarily for lush vegetation and a brown/tan-dominant pattern intended for drier terrain. These covers were widely used by American forces in Southeast Asia and are prominently seen in period photographs of U.S. Army and Marine Corps personnel.

The cover's foliage slots allowed soldiers to insert local vegetation for additional concealment. In the field, servicemen also commonly personalized their helmet covers with names, unit references, slogans, dates, or other markings, making surviving Vietnam-era examples particularly interesting to collectors.

Condition

This complete helmet assembly is in excellent condition for its age, retaining the steel M1 helmet, Steinberg liner, and Mitchell camouflage cover. The combination presents extremely well and provides the classic appearance associated with the American infantryman serving in Vietnam.
