History
This is an original World War I U.S. M1917 Bayonet, manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company for use with the U.S. Model 1917 Enfield rifle. The M1917 bayonet was based on the British P1907 design and was the standard issue bayonet for U.S. troops equipped with the M1917 rifle during WWI and into WWII for use with trench shotguns.
Bayonet Features:
- Manufacturer: Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Connecticut
- Blade: 17-inch single-edged blade with fullers, marked with "W" and the flaming bomb ordnance stamp on one side and U.S. with date stamp on the ricasso
- Grip: Two-piece walnut wood grips secured with two screws
- Pommel: Flat, with a working release button and muzzle ring
- Guard: Straight crossguard with muzzle ring designed to fit the M1917 rifle barrel
Scabbard:
- Type: Original WWI-era Maxim leather scabbard
- Maker: Jewell 1918, stamped on the leather body
- Construction: Leather-covered wooden body with steel throat and tip reinforcement
- Belt Hook: Standard U.S. belt hook fitting for attachment to web gear or a pistol belt
Historical Context:
The M1917 bayonet was adopted due to a shortage of the standard M1905 bayonets early in WWI. Produced by Remington, Winchester, and Eddystone, these bayonets served widely in WWI and saw continued service into WWII, particularly with the M1917 trench shotguns used by combat engineers, MPs, and U.S. Navy personnel.
This particular example, manufactured by Winchester, is highly sought after by collectors due to its lower production numbers compared to Remington. The presence of the Maxim-type scabbard with "Jewell 1918" markings adds authenticity and historical value, as Jewell was one of the main producers of leather scabbards during the Great War.
