Description
This is an Original World War I U.S. Army Officer M1912 Campaign Hat, one of the most recognizable and iconic pieces of early 20th-century American military headgear. Officially adopted in 1912 as the M1912 Service Hat (commonly referred to as the Campaign Hat or “Montana Peak” hat), this was the standard issue hat of U.S. Army officers during the Mexican Border Campaign, as well as throughout America’s involvement in the First World War. The hat had a high four-creased crown and a very wide brim to shield the eyes from the sun, symbolizing both the practicality of early 20th-century military officers, as well as the professionalism of the Corps of Officers of the U.S. Army. The M1912 Campaign Hat was eventually replaced by the steel pot of the M1917 Helmet, which was worn by officers for front-line combat in Europe. This original felt Campaign Hat is made from high quality olive drab felt. It has a classic four-dent "Montana Peak" crown and a broad, flat brim that forms the characteristic military profile of the hat. The Campaign Hat is fitted with an officer's cord and features a high-quality leather sweatband and interior construction. The felt is firm and holds the correct shape with only a few marks and minor signs of aging. It has been well cared for during its long history and will make a fantastic addition to any advanced World War I collection.
This Campaign Hat is in very good condition with good original color and wonderful patina. The felt has a few marks and lines to indicate this hat was worn but nothing too serious and certainly nothing that detracts from this wonderful historical piece of U.S. Army Headwear. There are no significant tears or repairs to this hat. The Brim is flat and wide with excellent fold to the Crown. The hat Cord is tied to the crown and the sweatband and hat construction is typical for an item from this period. Overall, this is an outstanding Campaign Hat that would look perfect on a manikin in a World War I Display. It is becoming increasingly difficult to locate authentic WWI U.S. Army officer campaign hats that have not been restored or altered in some fashion. These hats were used by the American Expeditionary Forces and the early years of the modern U.S. Army.
