Description
This original Iconic World War I U.S. Army Officer M1912 Campaign Hat with officer's hat cord and excellent preservation. The M1912 Campaign Hat, often referred to as the 'Montana Peak' hat, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) from World War I. The hat remained in service throughout the interwar period. Initially adopted in 1912 as the standard field hat for U.S. Army officers and enlisted men the M1912 Campaign Hat was worn by the AEF during training, on the borders and in France during 1917 and 1918. Made from high-quality olive drab felt, this original M1912 Campaign Hat for officers retains the four-dent "Montana Peak" crown so typical of these hats, exhibiting excellent shape and sharp creases. The broad brim has been carefully maintained to form a deep "U" to protect the wearer's face and neck. Though lightly worn with signs of careful handling, the felt has mellowed to a beautiful patina that speaks of its long history of faithful service. The supple leather sweatband has remained flexible and has not developed any cracks or dry rot. The interior of the hat has been well-maintained, showing the high quality of workmanship and materials found in period officer's headgear. The hat cord is for an officer of the Army and is a major part of the overall look of the hat. The cord is a vibrant color and appears to be in excellent condition. All of the ventilator grommets are also still present, and the hat has a great patina to it.

The hat is in excellent original condition. The olive drab felt is of high quality and has been expertly molded into the classic four-crease Montana Peak form that this style of campaign hat is known for. The brim is firm and has been kept in good shape, and the leather sweatband is complete and intact. The officer's cord is wrapped around the crown and is in excellent condition with strong and good color. The ventilator grommets are all intact. The hat has only light evidence of wear and has been well cared for over the years. As a result, this is a highly attractive and historically significant piece of World War I military artifacts that will display extremely well.
