Description
Up for sale is a WWI Era US Army AEF M1907 Leather Sling for the M1903 Springfield Rifle. The sling has both leather keepers. It has the correct brass hooks. The leather is soft and supple. There are some wrinkling and minor surface cracks in the leather. There are no visible manufacturer markings or dates on the sling. The brass hook on the short section of the sling, appears to have been moved down the sling and hand riveted in place. The head of the rivets are flattened out but have not been milled flush with the rest of the hook.
History
The original World War I U.S. Army M1907 leather rifle sling served as standard equipment for American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers who used the M1903 Springfield rifle. The sling consists of durable russet brown leather with a two-piece design that includes double brass hooks and claw buckles which enable adjustable length and secure attachment to rifle sling swivels. The M1907 sling served essential functions in both combat and marksmanship operations because it provided soldiers with a stable position for shooting during battles and training exercises. The slings received arsenal stamps and occasional date markings because they served as standard military equipment throughout America's Great War involvement and continued in service through World War II because of their proven reliability. The M1907 sling functions as an essential historical artifact from WWI U.S. military operations whether it accompanies an M1903 rifle or exists independently as a collectible. The equipment demonstrates the standards of the early 20th-century U.S. Ordnance Department and the equipment used by Doughboys during the Western Front.
