Description:

This Original WWII British Enfield No.5 MK1 "Jungle Carbine" chambered in .303 British, featuring a 10-round detachable magazine. This bolt-action rifle was specifically developed for jungle warfare in the Pacific Theater. The carbine is complete with all original hardware, including screws, sling mounts, butt plate, and barrel band. It’s a well-preserved, matching-number example with solid wood furniture and an excellent bore showing strong, clean rifling.

History

Designed in 1944 and primarily issued to British and Commonwealth forces in the Pacific and Southeast Asian theaters, the No.5 MK1 was renowned for its mobility and effectiveness in close-quarter jungle warfare. This model includes a rubber recoil pad, “lightening cuts” in the receiver and barrel to reduce weight, and a side-mounted rear sight adjustable for range.

Here are its key features:

  • Caliber: .303 British
  • Action: Bolt-action, rear-locking
  • Magazine: 10-round detachable box magazine
  • Barrel: Shortened 18.75-inch barrel with flash suppressor
  • Weight: Approximately 7 pounds unloaded – significantly lighter than the standard No.4 rifle
  • Stock: Lightweight hardwood stock with rubber recoil pad
  • Design Purpose: Optimized for jungle warfare with reduced weight and length
  • Sights: Flip-up aperture rear sight graduated to 800 yards; fixed post front sight
  • Bayonet Compatibility: Accepts the No.5 blade-style bayonet
  • Production Period: 1944–1947
  • Manufacturers: Royal Ordnance Factory (Fazakerley), BSA Shirley

The No.5 MK1 Jungle Carbine was favored for its maneuverability in close-quarters and dense terrain but earned a mixed reputation due to concerns about accuracy and "wandering zero." Despite this, it remains a prized collectible and a distinctive WWII military rifle.
