This is an Original Deutsches Kreuz in Gold produced by maker code “134” – Otto Klein & Co., GmbH of Hanau, a respected wartime manufacturer. Officially instituted on September 28, 1941, the German Cross in Gold was awarded to military personnel in recognition of repeated acts of bravery in combat—typically between six to eight qualifying actions—or for exceptional leadership on the battlefield.
This example is a finely executed five-piece, die-struck construction, showcasing the quality associated with Otto Klein production. It features a light cupal base, a white aluminum core, and a gold-gilded tombak wreath, all complemented by vibrant red and black enamel work.
The obverse is visually striking, with a large, raised black enamel central device set against a smooth white/silvered aluminum field.
