Description:

This is an original World War II German M40 steel combat helmet of the Heer (Army) in single decal form. The M40 was made by F.W. Quist GmbH of Esslingen, Germany. The Q64 stamped on the shell is the maker and size. The lot number for this shell is 248. The leather liner is also original. The helmet is in very good original condition and one of the most recognized of all the German combat helmets used during World War II.

Manufacturer & Markings

There are two stamps, 'Q64' one which reads F.W. Quist GmbH of Esslingen and the other being the shell size '64' meaning a 64 cm shell size was used to make this helmet. Quist were one of the larger manufacturers of German steel helmets during WWII and are well collected today due to their distinctive shell shape and the numerous production detail that can be found on examples.

The helmet is further marked with lot number 248, identifying the helmet with the production batch from which it came.

M40 Heer Configuration

This M40 is an evolution of the M35 design to make helmet production more simple, but retaining the solid look and wonderful lines of German helmets. The ventilation opening is now a simple stamped feature of the steel shell itself, whereas the M35 helmet features separately installed vent bushings.

This is a single decal Heer helmet, meaning it has only the German Army eagle insignia applied to the side of the helmet shell. By M40 production time the national tricolor shield that was applied to the sides of earlier M35 helmets had been removed from production and was no longer issued.

Original Leather Liner

The interior retains the original leather liner, often showing wear, darkening, stiffness, staining etc. after having served during the war and being laid away for over 80 years.

The original leather liner, as well as other details such as shell marks, liner decal, helmet finish, etc. are shown in the additional photos. These should be carefully studied to help determine originality and overall condition.

Collector Significance

Collector items: Original Quist-manufactured M40 Heer helmets of all makes are highly sought after by collectors of German WWII headgear and equipment. M40s with a maker-marked liner and their lot number are particularly coveted by collectors and historians, because they allow identification of the manufacture date and other characteristics of the combat helmet in question.
