Description
This is a WW2 “All-Matching” K98 rifle manufactured by the BYF in 1944 as a German low turret sniper rifle and fitted with an "Ajack" marked 4X90 sniper scope. The turret mounted sniper rifles were used from 1939 through 1945 and proved to be one of the best German snipers. The barrel is matching and dated 1944. The left side of the receiver has an "Eagle/135" acceptance proof, and left side of both the receiver and barrel have a large a single "Eagle". The left rear scope base is stamped with a single "Eagle/135" proof. The matching bolt is fitted with a milled low scope safety. The rifle is fitted with a standard wartime laminated handguard and stock that is fitted with a checkered cupped buttplate marked bqr. The right side of the buttstock and pistol grip area is stamped with an "Eagle/WaA135" Waffenamt proofmark. As noted, this sniper rifle is fitted with an all blued "Ajack" 4X90 power marked sniper scope with standard turret rings with the front ring numbered "2948". The left side of the base of the elevation dial is marked "44273", and the right side is marked "AJACK 4X90". The elevation ring is numbered 1-8 (100-800 meters). This rifle is complete with a winter trigger assembly, and an original WW2 brown leather sling.
History
From 1939–1945 the German military adapted large numbers of standard Mauser K98 rifles into sniper and designated marksman variants. Factory conversions and field conversions both occurred: optics such as the AJACK 4×90 and the ZF4/ZFK series were mounted using a variety of bases and mounts produced by specialist firms. A. Jackenkroll (AJACK) of Berlin produced low-turret pattern mounts that were favored on many K98 sniper conversions for their low profile and solid locking systems. By 1944, material shortages and production pressures meant that many sniper rifles were assembled from available service rifles and optics, making well-documented, matching examples from this late period particularly desirable to collectors.
