Description:
This is an Original World War II German General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) in Silver Grade, for sale online.
The German General Assault Badge was awarded to soldiers who were involved in battles but not necessarily on the front line. The award was given to soldiers from artillery, engineer, anti-tank, anti-aircraft units and other combat units that were involved in ground assaults.
Combat badges for assault on land are worn on the field service uniform, on service dress and on tropical service dress. In peacetime times this assault badge is worn on the dress uniform. Thus many wartime assault badges were handed in after the war. Most combat badges for assault on land are of wartime origin.
This Silver Grade General Assault Badge has retained a lot of its original silvered finish and has developed some very nice honest to wear patination to the surface. The reverse of the badge still retains the original pin and catch for attaching the badge to the left breast pocket of a service dress uniform.
Historical Significance
The General Assault Badge unlike many other German combat badges were not restricted to certain branches or services of the German Army. They were awarded to a wide variety of soldiers in all types of combat situations. In order to qualify for the award of the General Assault Badge the soldier had to participate in three separate infantry or armored assaults on three different days, unless already entitled to the Infantry Assault Badge.
This combat award was issued to soldiers on every front including Western Europe, North Africa, Italy and the Eastern Front. Therefore original examples of this award are highly sought after by historians and collectors of Third Reich militaria.
Condition
The General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) has very good condition for an original WWII German military decoration. The age, surface wear and patina all show well and in excellent period condition. All details on the eagle, wreath, and on the weapons are still clear and show well.
