Description
This is an original World War II German 1939 Iron Cross 1st Class Spange, Type II pattern, offered in excellent collectible condition. The Spange was issued to recipients who had previously earned the Iron Cross 1st Class during World War I and were later awarded the same grade again during World War II.
This example is the desirable Type II pattern, featuring the German national eagle with outstretched wings clutching a wreathed swastika above the 1939 date bar. The reverse is unmarked, as commonly encountered on period examples, and retains its original attachment hardware. The details remain crisp, with strong definition to the eagle, wreath, and date numerals.
The Iron Cross Spange was officially instituted in 1939 and served as a repeat-award clasp rather than a replacement medal. It was worn above the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class on the uniform tunic, signifying that the recipient had distinguished himself in both World War I and World War II.
A fine original WWII German award badge, ideal for display with an Iron Cross collection, medal grouping, or Third Reich military uniform display.
Condition: Excellent overall condition with attractive age toning, sharp detail, and intact reverse hardware. Unmarked Type II example.
