Description

This original World War II German Iron Cross 1st Class 1939 Spange is a highly desirable combat decoration awarded to German soldiers who had previously received the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class during the First World War and later distinguished themselves again during the Second World War. Rather than receiving a new medal, these veterans were issued the 1939 Spange (clasp) to be worn above their original 1914 Iron Cross, symbolizing continued bravery and service across two world wars.

This example is maker marked “L/11”, indicating production by the well-known German firm Wilhelm Deumer of Lüdenscheid, one of the most respected manufacturers of Third Reich military decorations. Deumer produced many high-quality awards for the German armed forces and their pieces are highly regarded among collectors for their craftsmanship and historical authenticity.

The clasp features the iconic national eagle clutching a wreath with the 1939 date, positioned above a replica Iron Cross device, designed to be mounted above the original 1914 Iron Cross worn on the uniform. The reverse retains the correct vertical pin-back fastening system, allowing the clasp to be securely attached to the tunic.
