Description
Original WWII German 98K Mauser Rifle bayonet and scabbard marked 42ASW. Vet bring back from the Battle of the Bulge: the Herdera bayonet was claimed by 45th Division MasterSergeant Jack Steiner.
This is an original World War II German K98 bayonet complete with its matching steel scabbard, both marked "42 ASW," indicating manufacture in 1942 by E. & F. Hörster of Solingen, Germany—one of the major wartime producers of edged weapons for the Wehrmacht.
Designed for use with the Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle, this bayonet features a full-length steel blade with a blued finish, showcasing wartime utility and rugged durability. The blade retains its original factory edge and shows minimal signs of wear, with clear "42 ASW" stampings on the ricasso, affirming its authenticity and wartime production date.
The ribbed Bakelite grips are intact and securely fastened, displaying the typical dark brown to black color used in mid-war production. The push-button release is fully functional, and the pommel bears the Waffenamt inspection stamps, adding to its collectible value.
The scabbard is marked clc 43,”. It shows only light field wear, consistent with age and use, and fits the blade snugly.
History
The 42asw bayonets represent mid-war production, balancing quality and efficiency before later-war economic measures reduced finish standards. As such, they are highly collectible and offer a tangible connection to the German soldier's field gear during the height of WWII.
Collectors value these pieces for their authenticity, matching numbers, and factory markings, with "42asw" examples being especially desirable due to E. & F. Hörster’s long-standing Solingen blade-making heritage.
