Description
This is an original World War II German Karabiner 98k (K98k) bolt-action sniper rifle, manufactured in 1943 by J.P. Sauer & Sohn, chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92×57mm) and equipped with the compact ZF-41 sniper/sharpshooter optical system. The rifle retains matching-numbered components as represented and is accompanied by its leather sling.
This is an especially desirable example of the German ZF-41-equipped K98k, a specialized optical configuration introduced during WWII to provide selected infantrymen with enhanced target-identification and precision-fire capability while retaining the standard handling characteristics of the K98k service rifle.
1943 J.P. Sauer & Sohn K98k
J.P. Sauer & Sohn of Suhl was one of the major manufacturers involved in wartime K98k production. This 1943-dated rifle exhibits the classic late-war German military K98k configuration, including its Mauser-pattern controlled-feed bolt action, internal five-round magazine, military sights and full-length laminated or hardwood military stock as applicable to this specific rifle.
The 7.92×57mm Mauser, commonly referred to by American collectors as 8mm Mauser, was the standard German military rifle cartridge of the period.
Of particular collector importance, the rifle is represented as matching, an increasingly desirable characteristic among surviving WWII K98k rifles. Matching-numbered examples are especially sought after because so many K98ks were rebuilt, arsenal refurbished, captured, disassembled or assembled from mixed components during and after the war.
Original “clb” Optische Präzisionswerke GmbH. ZF-41 Sniper Scope
The rifle is fitted with a ZF-41 optical sight marked “clb.” The ZF-41 (Zielfernrohr 41) was a compact, low-magnification military optic developed specifically for use with the K98k. The optics are extremely clear.
Unlike conventional high-magnification sniper scopes, the ZF-41 was mounted forward of the receiver. This arrangement allowed the rifle to retain much of the handling and loading characteristics of the standard infantry K98k while providing the shooter with optical assistance for identifying and engaging targets at greater practical distances.
The ZF-41 system has become one of the most recognizable and historically interesting German optical rifle configurations of WWII.
“duv” Berlin-Lübecker Maschinenfabrik ZF-41 Mount
Complementing the scope is the “duv”-marked ZF-41 mount, identifying manufacture under the wartime code associated with Berlin-Lübecker Maschinenfabrik.
The presence of identifiable wartime manufacturer markings on the scope and mounting components adds considerably to the historical and collector interest of the complete rifle.
The ZF-41 mounting system was designed to engage the rifle's specialized mounting base and position the optic forward over the rear-sight area. Original ZF-41 scopes, mounts and correctly configured rifles are highly collectible individually, making a complete period-style assembly particularly desirable.
Leather Rifle Sling
The rifle is accompanied by a German leather sling, completing the classic appearance of the wartime K98k. The sling complements the rifle well and adds to its display value as a representative German infantry/sniper weapon system.
Historical Significance
The Karabiner 98k was adopted by the German military in 1935 and became Germany's principal service rifle throughout WWII. Millions were manufactured by several German arms producers, including J.P. Sauer & Sohn.
The ZF-41 represents an important stage in German wartime development of optically equipped infantry rifles. Rather than serving exclusively as a conventional high-magnification sniper system, the ZF-41 concept occupied a position between the standard infantry rifle and the more specialized scoped K98k sniper rifles.
Today, original WWII K98k rifles retaining their wartime configuration, matching components and optical equipment are highly sought after by advanced collectors of German small arms and military history.
Condition
Excellent original condition. The rifle presents exceptionally well for an approximately 83-year-old military firearm and retains the strong overall appearance expected of a carefully preserved collector-grade example. The stock, metal components, ZF-41 scope, mount and leather sling should be examined closely in the accompanying photographs for individual markings, serial numbers, Waffenamt inspection stamps, finish, and condition.
