Description
This WW2 Original German “Afrika Korps” Painted MGZ34 Optical Sight for the MG34 and MG42 machine gun is an exceptional and highly sought-after example of German wartime optical engineering. This scarce optical sight is manufactured by maker code “dhq,” dhq (J.D. Möller G.m.b.H., Wedel) one of the wartime contractors producing precision optics for the German Wehrmacht. Bearing serial number 16585, this authentic MGZ34 optical sight remains in excellent condition and is accompanied by its original MGZ 40 marked transit case, making it a complete and highly desirable collector’s set for advanced German machine gun or optics collections.
The MGZ34 (Maschinengewehr Zielfernrohr 34) was developed as a precision optical aiming device for the German MG34 and later MG42 machine guns. These optics were primarily utilized for sustained fire roles, long-range defensive positions, anti-aircraft applications, and indirect fire support. The optical system allowed German machine gun crews to engage targets with significantly greater accuracy at extended distances compared to standard iron sights. Due to their specialized battlefield role and limited production numbers, original wartime MGZ34 optics are extremely difficult to locate today, especially complete examples retaining their original transport equipment.
This example features clear wartime markings and correct military construction throughout. The sight body retains much of its original wartime finish with only minor handling wear consistent with careful storage and preservation. The optics remain bright and functional, with excellent glass clarity for a combat-used wartime optic of this age. The adjustment dials and ranging mechanisms operate smoothly, demonstrating the high level of German wartime machining and optical craftsmanship. The original serial number “16585” is clearly stamped on the body of the sight.
The accompanying transit case is correctly marked “MGZ 40,” indicating wartime production for the MGZ optical system. Constructed from heavy-duty metal and finished in tropical tan paint, the case was designed to protect the delicate optical instrument during transport and field operations. The case remains in excellent condition with strong original finish, functional hardware, and correct internal fittings for securing the optic and accessories. Original MGZ transit cases are rarely encountered separately, and surviving matched sets substantially increase collector desirability and historical value.
The MGZ34 optical sight itself is primarily constructed from precision-machined steel and aluminum components with brass internal optical assemblies and high-quality wartime German glass optics. The rugged military construction allowed the optic to withstand the harsh battlefield conditions encountered on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
Approximate Dimensions of the MGZ34 Optical Sight:
- Length: approximately 13 to 14 inches
- Width: approximately 4 inches
- Height: approximately 5 inches
- Weight: approximately 7 pounds
Approximate Dimensions of the MGZ 40 Transit Case:
- Length: approximately 16 inches
- Width: approximately 8 inches
- Height: approximately 7 inches
Original German MGZ34 optical sights were heavily used throughout the war and many were destroyed, captured, or discarded after 1945. Complete surviving examples with original matching transit cases are now extremely scarce and highly prized by advanced collectors of German WWII machine gun accessories, optics, and militaria. The “dhq” manufacturer code further enhances the authenticity and collector appeal of this outstanding wartime optical system.
This WW2 Original German MGZ34 Optical Sight with MGZ 40 transit case would make an exceptional centerpiece display item for any serious WWII German militaria collection, especially those focused on MG34 / MG42 machine gun accessories, German optics, or elite Wehrmacht equipment.
