Description
This is an original, inert example of the German Model 39 "Eierhandgranate" (Egg Hand Grenade), a compact and highly recognizable fragmentation grenade used extensively by German forces throughout World War II. The Model 39, introduced in 1939, was designed to be a lightweight, easily carried alternative to the larger Model 24 stick grenade, offering better portability for assault troops, paratroopers, and vehicle crews.
The grenade's distinctive oval “egg” shape earned it the nickname "Eierhandgranate" among German troops. Its small size allowed soldiers to carry several on their person or in their gear, making it ideal for close-quarters combat and trench warfare.
This particular example retains its original dark field-grey paint finish with minor period wear, consistent with storage and age. The body is constructed of steel and remains free from postwar modifications. It is fitted with an inert, original-type fuze head, which is securely threaded into the top of the body. The fuze cap would typically house a B.Z.E. (Brennzünder Eifer), a pull-type friction igniter with a 4.5-second delay when live.
As an inert piece, this grenade has been safely deactivated in accordance with ordnance disposal regulations and is void of all explosive components. It serves today as a historically significant relic of WWII German infantry equipment.
