Description
A lovely Silver Grade Panzer Assault Badge (Panzerkampfabzeichen) made from oval-shaped Silver zinc. The obverse features an intricately detailed oak leaf wreath which is tied together at the bottom and is crowned by a Heer-style national eagle grasping a mobile swastika. At the center of the wreath a Panzerkampfwagen IV is depicted advancing on grass. The vehicle’s left track has come off the ground and is running along the edge of the badge. The reverse of the badge is smooth and features a vertical needle to which a crimped plated hinge is attached to the top of the badge. The bottom of the reverse features a crimped round wire catch. The badge bears the maker’s mark “DH” which confirms that it was made by Hermann Aurich. The badge measures 41.65 mm (1.64 inches) wide and 60.06 mm (2.36 inches) high. It is in near mint condition and as such is a rare opportunity for any collector to acquire a high grade example of the badge.
History
The Panzer Badge was introduced on 20 December 1939 in order to award those Panzer soldiers who were involved in armored assaults. The design was carried out by the Berlin firm of Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus, and the award was authorized by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch. The Bronze award was introduced on 6 June 1940, in order to award crew members of Armored Vehicles, which were not tanks. A standard award document was issued to each recipient for the award of a Panzer Badge. Award documents showed the recipient’s rank, name, and that of the authorizing officer. The badge itself was a standard item of award wear and was to be pinned to the left pocket of the tunic. It was awarded to all personnel who had served in a combat arm of the Panzer troops including armored troops, Panzer grenadier troops using armored vehicles, reconnaissance troops using armored cars, and the rifle battalions of Panzer divisions. Awards of the badges were typically authorized by the regimental or divisional commander.
