History
This is an original Second Model Luftwaffe Dagger, introduced in 1937 and used by officers and non-commissioned officers of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) throughout World War II. A remarkable piece of military history, this dagger showcases the fine craftsmanship and distinct symbolism associated with the Luftwaffe and the broader military tradition of the German Reich. The 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger replaced the earlier 1st model in 1937, simplifying the design while retaining its ceremonial and symbolic significance. These daggers were not battlefield weapons but served as a part of the officer's dress uniform, representing status, honor, and allegiance to the Reich.
Features:
- Blade: Double-edged, nickel-plated steel blade in excellent condition, with a straight profile and pointed tip. Often marked by makers such as Eickhorn, WKC, or Puma.
- Grip: Wrapped in blue or white celluloid over a wooden core, spiraled with twisted aluminum wire for a firm hold and elegant finish.
- Crossguard: Cast in aluminum or zinc alloy, featuring the iconic down-swept Luftwaffe eagle clutching a swastika, symbolizing air superiority.
- Pommel: Rounded, with a sunburst pattern encircling another Luftwaffe eagle, echoing the crossguard design.
- Scabbard: Steel with a pebbled finish and two suspension rings, designed for wear on a dress uniform. Some models include ornate fittings and a darker patina.
- Length: Approx. 40 cm (15.75 in)
