Description:
This is an Extremely Rare Original German SS 25 Year Long Service Award gold-finished, Swastika-shaped Decoration given for 25 years of service in the Schutzstaffel (SS). This is a beautiful Type 1 example, die struck from Tombak, and in great condition. The original cornflower blue ribbon has the “SS” runic emblem hand embroidered in gold bullion.
History:
The SS Long Service Awards (German: SS-Dienstauszeichnungen) were instituted by Adolf Hitler on 30 January 1938 to recognize faithful and loyal service within the ranks of the SS, including the SS-Verfügungstruppen (Dispositional Troops), SS-Totenkopfverbände (Death’s Head Units), and the SS-Junkerschulen (Officer Candidate Schools).
These awards were issued in four classes: 4 years, 8 years, 12 years, and 25 years of service. The 25-Year Long Service Award represented the highest class, honoring members who had dedicated a quarter of a century to the SS and, by extension, the Nazi Party.
The SS Long Service Award for 25 years was the rarest of these decorations. Although the Nazi regime itself did not last long enough for members to achieve a full 25 years of post-1933 service, the “Kampfzeit” (Time of Struggle)—the pre-1933 years of Nazi Party activity—was counted double. This adjustment allowed awards of the highest grade to be issued despite the short lifespan of the regime.
While the 4-year and 8-year awards were by far the most commonly presented, the 25-year medal symbolized exceptional loyalty and was reserved for a select few within the SS hierarchy.
The German Third Reich issued the SS Long Service Medal for 25 Years of Service which came with a ribbon.
