This WW2 Original German SS Pith Helmet, shield marked JFS 42, is a scarce and highly collectible example of the tropical headgear issued to German forces during World War II. Pith helmets were designed for service in hot and arid climates and saw use across North Africa, the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, and parts of the Eastern Front.
Historical Background
The pith helmet was an important component of Germany’s tropical uniform program, adopted as operations expanded into warmer theaters. While most commonly associated with the Afrikakorps, these helmets were also issued to personnel serving in Italy, the Balkans, and other southern regions. The SS pattern is distinguished by its correct SS-style shield, reflecting Waffen-SS issue rather than Heer or Luftwaffe variants.

The interior marking “JFS 42” indicates production in 1942, during the height of Germany’s tropical campaigns. Such clearly legible maker/date combinations are increasingly difficult to find and add significant authenticity and collector appeal.

History
The pith helmet stands as one of the most recognizable elements of the German tropical uniform during World War II. Although famously associated with Rommel’s Afrikakorps, these helmets were worn widely across all southern theaters where tropical kit was issued—including Italy, the Mediterranean islands, the Balkans, and even the warmer regions of southern Russia. They were utilized by personnel of the German Army (Heer), Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and the Waffen-SS.
While the basic helmet form remained consistent, the primary distinguishing feature between branches was the pair of metal insignia plates affixed to the sides, produced in the same style as decal emblems used on the steel M35/M40 helmets. Early-production pith helmets were covered with a durable twill fabric, whereas the later second-pattern examples featured a felt exterior.
As German forces retreated from North Africa, large quantities of these helmets remained untouched in supply depots. Many were subsequently captured intact by Allied forces at the end of the war. For decades, later-pattern examples were relatively easy to encounter on the collectors’ market. Today, however, complete and fully original pith helmets, especially those in excellent condition—have become increasingly scarce and highly sought after.
