Description

This Original Iron Cross 1st Class stands as an outstanding and highly attractive representation of the Third Reich combat award. This example is marked "7", the numerical LDO (Leistungsgemeinschaft der Deutschen Ordenshersteller) code for the firm Paul Meybauer, located in Berlin. Meybauer was a respected manufacturer of both WW1 and WW2 orders and decorations, producing a variety of badges, clasps, and awards.

History

The Iron Cross First Class (Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse) was one of the most recognizable and prestigious military decorations of the Third Reich, awarded for acts of bravery, outstanding leadership, or continued merit in battle.

Historical Background

Reinstituted by Adolf Hitler on September 1, 1939, at the outbreak of World War II, the Iron Cross was presented in several grades, with the First Class awarded to those who had already earned the Iron Cross Second Class. It was worn on the left breast pocket, above the ribbon bar, and became a visible emblem of frontline valor.

Design & Features

The Iron Cross First Class followed the traditional Prussian form established in 1813: a cross pattée with a blackened iron core and a silvered frame.

  • Obverse Details: A central swastika flanked by the raised date 1939 at the lower arm.
  • Reverse: A flat, silvered back with a vertical pin and hinge for uniform attachment.
  • Dimensions: Approximately 44 mm by 44 mm.

Manufacturer – Paul Meybauer (Code "7")

Paul Meybauer, established in Berlin in the late 19th century, was one of Germany’s premier medal makers. Known for precision and quality craftsmanship, Meybauer produced awards that collectors today regard as highly desirable due to their sharp detail and fine finishing. The “7” hallmark identifies Meybauer’s wartime production under the official LDO system of authorized makers.

Collectability & Significance

Original Meybauer Iron Crosses First Class are sought-after by collectors for their solid construction, quality silvered frames, and historical authenticity. The presence of the "7" hallmark provides certainty of origin, adding to both its desirability and value. Condition plays a significant role: examples with intact black enamel or paint on the iron core, minimal tarnishing, and original hardware command premium interest.

Legacy

The Iron Cross, especially the First Class, remains one of the most iconic military decorations of the 20th century. Pieces produced by Paul Meybauer stand out as enduring artifacts of the era, symbolizing the intersection of military tradition, wartime valor, and the industrial craftsmanship of Third Reich Germany.
