Description:
Offered here is an original World War II German Luftwaffe Officer’s metal breast eagle, manufactured by the renowned firm F.A. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid, Germany. This is an attractive and highly collectible example of the metal national eagle insignia worn by Luftwaffe officers during the Third Reich period.
The insignia features the distinctive Luftwaffe national eagle in flight, with its wings extended horizontally and the eagle clutching a wreathed swastika in its talons. The sharply defined feathering, wing structure, head, wreath, and other details display the quality of manufacture associated with Assmann-produced insignia.
F.A. Assmann & Söhne Manufacture
F.A. Assmann & Söhne, Lüdenscheid was one of Germany’s established manufacturers of military and political insignia and produced numerous badges, buckles, uniform fittings, and other metal insignia during the Third Reich era. Original Assmann-manufactured pieces are particularly desirable to collectors due to the firm's distinctive construction methods and maker markings.
The reverse of this eagle is marked “D.R.G.M.”, an abbreviation for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster, referring to a registered design or utility model under the German Reich system. This marking is an interesting period manufacturing detail and adds further character to the piece.
The reverse retains its pin attachment system, allowing the metal eagle to be secured directly to the uniform.
Luftwaffe Officer’s Breast Eagle
Unlike the familiar embroidered cloth Luftwaffe breast eagles sewn directly onto service uniforms, metal versions provided a particularly sharp and formal appearance and are encountered in association with certain officer uniforms and private-purchase applications.
The Luftwaffe eagle became one of the most recognizable elements of German Air Force uniforms during WWII. Its outstretched-wing design was worn prominently on the right breast and immediately identified the wearer as a member of the Luftwaffe.
Condition
This original example remains in excellent condition, especially considering its age. The metal construction retains strong overall detail, including well-defined feathering throughout the wings and body. The reverse attachment hardware and D.R.G.M. marking is present, with only appropriate minor age and handling characteristics consistent with an authentic period insignia.
This would make an excellent addition to an advanced WWII German Luftwaffe insignia collection, particularly for collectors specializing in officer uniforms, metal breast eagles, Assmann-manufactured insignia, or original Third Reich aviation artifacts.
