History
The WW2 German War Merit Cross with Swords 2nd Class (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern) was instituted on October 18, 1939, by Adolf Hitler. Awarded to military personnel and civilians for exceptional service to the war effort that did not involve direct combat, the version with swords was specifically intended for those who demonstrated bravery or performed meritorious service under enemy fire.
This cross is a Maltese-style bronze award, featuring crossed swords between the arms to signify a combat-related merit. The obverse displays a raised swastika within a central medallion surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves. The reverse is typically plain or stamped with the date "1939."
Each award was issued with a ribbon, consisting of red, white, and black stripes — colors symbolizing the Third Reich. The cross was usually worn suspended from the ribbon on the tunic, either from the second buttonhole or mounted in a medal bar.
The War Merit Cross with Swords 2nd Class remains a highly collectible artifact today, valued for its historical significance and variations in manufacturing, including maker-marked examples.
