Description:
This is an original German WWII Luftwaffe M40 single decal steel helmet. It is stamped with the code hkp62 on the shell. It also comes with the original M31 leather liner for a size 55cm helmet, and a 1942 dated C. Korn chinstrap. The exterior of the helmet has over 90% of the original lightly textured Fliegerblau blue gray paint left on it. The Luftwaffe eagle decal on the wearer’s left side of the helmet has approximately 85% of the original paint left on it. It is a single decal as found on later production M40 helmets. The three original liner retaining pins are still intact and in very good condition. The front two pin heads have worn and lost most of the paint, but the rear pin head has retained considerably more paint and appears to be in better condition.
The stamped steel shell of this German WWII Luftwaffe M40 single decal steel helmet retains more than 90% of its original lightly textured Luftwaffe Fliegerblau paint. The exterior of the helmet retains the strongly impressed exterior texturing of the Luftwaffe Fliegerblau paint, with only scattered scuffs and scrapes which are visible in some of the photographs. The interior of the helmet of a German WWII Luftwaffe M40 single decal steel helmet retains an even higher percentage of its original paint and is correctly smooth. The strongly impressed exterior texturing of the Luftwaffe Fliegerblau paint was a feature which was applied to the exterior of the helmet only.
The original Luftwaffe eagle decal is located on the wearer’s left side of the helmet. The decal is in good condition and remains approximately 85% intact. The areas of missing decal are where the exterior texture of the helmet has been more pronounced, and the decal has flaked off in these areas. The decal also shows signs of light age-related checking and minor discoloration.
The Rear interior neck guard is stamped with batch number 14. And the wearer’s left interior apron is stamped: hkp62.
Sächsische Emaillier und Stanzwerke A.G., maker code for hkp (Sächsische Emaillier und Stanzwerke A.G.) and the number 62 denotes the size of the helmet. Size 62 helmets are small and will accommodate a liner of size 54cm to 55cm, or US size 6 3/4 to 6 5/8. Note that towards the end of the war the SE marking was dropped in favor of a three-letter code "hkp" which was later moved to the rear skirt of the helmet.
All three retaining pins for the liner are present and in good order. The front two of these have largely been stripped of paint but the rear one still retains a large portion of it. The metal used for these pins appears to be of galvanized steel construction.
The original M31 leather liner is still in place. The liner consists of eight fingers including the top tie. The leather of the liner is of a light beige color and is in good condition. There are some stains and wear to the liner on the forehead and outer rim of the helmet.
Galvanized steel liner band stamped with 62 n.A. / 55. The leather of the liner is stamped 55 (inside a circle). There are faint stamps on the opposite side of the liner band, but they are too lightly stamped to read.
This is a circular stamped marking, inside a circle. The reverse of the liner band shows faint marks on it. However, these are too lightly stamped to be of any use in trying to determine their origin.
The late war pattern of the chinstrap is depicted. Some wear is visible on the painted steel buckle as well as the attachment studs. The leather of the strap is stiff but has no dry rot. The leather is of full length and has all thirteen holes for the adjustment of the strap. There are no tears in the leather.
The end of the longer strap is faintly maker marked and dated: KORN, ALZEY, 1942
This is a very nice lightly used M40 Luftwaffe helmet. The helmet is an hkp coded shell, a 1942 dated combat headgear item, and it is part of an advanced German WWII helmet collection. The exterior of the helmet is hkp62, a batch number of 14 is stamped on the rear interior neck guard. Over 90% of the original lightly textured Luftwaffe Fliegerblau paint has survived on the exterior of the helmet. The original Luftwaffe eagle decal has survived in excess of 92% on the helmet. The interior of the helmet contains an original size 55 M31 leather liner with the top tie in place. The C. Korn chinstrap is complete and dated to 1942.
