Description:
Offered is an original pre-WWII Imperial Japanese Type 14 Nambu semi-automatic pistol, chambered in 8mm Nambu and manufactured under the Nagoya Arsenal system in 1937. This example bears Serial Number 33453 and remains in very good original condition.
The Type 14 Nambu was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1925 (the 14th year of the Taish? era), giving the pistol its Type 14 designation. It became one of the principal Japanese military sidearms of the prewar and World War II periods and was issued to officers, NCOs, and other personnel throughout Japan's military campaigns.
Features
This original example features the distinctive Type 14 configuration, including its slender barrel and receiver profile, enclosed bolt system, knurled cocking piece, trigger guard, and traditional checkered grip panels. It is chambered for the 8x22mm Nambu cartridge, commonly referred to as 8mm Nambu.
The pistol is marked with Serial Number 33453 and dates to 1937, making it an early pre-WWII example from the period when Japan was dramatically expanding its military operations in East Asia.
Historical Significance
The Type 14 was designed from earlier Nambu pistol developments associated with Japanese arms designer Kijir? Nambu. Production continued through the end of World War II, and surviving pistols display numerous manufacturing and configuration variations that make the Type 14 a particularly interesting field for Japanese militaria and firearms collectors.
A 1937-dated Type 14 represents the earlier production period and predates the simplified manufacturing characteristics encountered on many late-war examples.
Condition
This pistol is in very good condition for its age, retaining an attractive overall appearance with expected evidence of military service, handling, and age. The metal components, markings, grips, and small parts should be examined closely in the accompanying photographs to evaluate originality and condition.
