Description:
This nearly mint Arisaka Type 44 Cavalry Carbine is an exceptionally rare original WWII Imperial Japanese firearm. Chambered for the 6.5x50mm Japanese cartridge, this carbine is complete with the folding bayonet characteristic of this model and also has the very desired Imperial Chrysanthemum ("Mum") intact on the receiver. In excellent condition, this will be a highly desirable addition to any Japanese military small arms collection.
History & Design
The Type 44 Cavalry Carbine was issued to the mounted troops of the Imperial Japanese Army. It was officially adopted in 1911, corresponding to the 44th year of the Emperor Meiji’s reign. The rifle is essentially an Arisaka bolt-action design and was produced as a compact military carbine so that the cavalryman would not have to carry a separate bayonet.
Most noticeable, when the upper rear part of the barrel is pulled back, the permanently mounted bayonet folds down behind the barrel in a recess in the lower part of the forearm. Deployed, it is fixed to the rear of the rifle, making the carbine suitable for close combat.
The Type 44 was issued in 6.5x50mm Japanese. The bolt action is manually cycled, with a five shot magazine internal to the rifle. The short overall length, along with the short barrel and correspondingly short stock, were well suited for use by cavalry troops.
Intact Imperial Chrysanthemum
The Collector will also note that this rare Carbine has an intact Imperial Japanese Chrysanthemum (often referred to by collectors as the “Mum”) stamped on the receiver of the firearm. Many Japanese rifles had their chrysanthemums ground, defaced or otherwise cancelled at the end of WW II. These Mum’intact arms are considered the highest of the Imperial Armed Forces property arms by collectors.
Most Japanese firearms had their chrysanthemums either ground, defaced or dislinned at the end of WWII. Collectors are now searching for examples where the Chrysanthemum has been left intact.
