Description
This original WWII Imperial Japanese Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle, chambered in 7.7×58mm Japanese, featuring its distinctive two-piece takedown construction, matching-number configuration, intact Imperial chrysanthemum (“Mum”), and folding anti-aircraft wings on the rear sight. Serial number 7454. This exceptional example remains in excellent original condition.
Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle
The Type 2 was developed specifically for use by Imperial Japanese airborne forces during World War II. A conventional full-length infantry rifle was cumbersome during parachute operations, leading Japanese designers to develop a rifle that could be separated into two major sections for transport during a jump and rapidly assembled after landing.
Rather than simply shortening the standard Type 99 rifle, the Type 2 incorporated a specialized takedown system. The barrel and fore end separate from the receiver, action, and buttstock, creating two relatively compact sections. Once joined, the components are securely locked together to form a full-size bolt-action service rifle.
This unusual construction makes the Type 2 one of the most mechanically distinctive Japanese military rifles produced during WWII and a particularly desirable variation within the Arisaka family.
Matching Serial Number 7454
This rifle is identified by serial number 7454 and is represented as a matching example. Matching Type 2 rifles are especially desirable because the takedown design made it possible for the two primary rifle sections and other serialized components to become separated or mismatched during wartime service, capture, and the decades following WWII.
The matching configuration substantially adds to the rifle's collector appeal and historical integrity.
Intact Imperial Chrysanthemum
Of particular importance is the rifle's intact Imperial Japanese chrysanthemum, commonly referred to by collectors as the “Mum.”
The 16-petal chrysanthemum stamped on Japanese military rifles represented ownership by the Japanese Emperor and Imperial government. Many surviving Japanese rifles encountered at the end of the war had their chrysanthemums ground, defaced, or otherwise canceled before surrender or disposition.
An original Type 2 retaining a clearly intact Mum is therefore considerably more desirable to collectors than an otherwise comparable example with the Imperial marking removed.
Anti-Aircraft Rear Sight Wings
The rifle retains the characteristic Type 99-style rear sight with folding anti-aircraft lead wings. When extended, these lateral arms were intended to provide reference points for estimating lead against low-flying aircraft.
Although of limited practical effectiveness, the anti-aircraft sight is one of the most recognizable features associated with early and mid-war Japanese Type 99-pattern rifles. Complete surviving examples retaining these folding wings are particularly attractive from a collector standpoint.
7.7×58mm Japanese Chambering
The Type 2 is chambered for the Japanese military 7.7×58mm rimless cartridge, the same principal cartridge associated with the Type 99 Arisaka rifle. It utilizes the strong, manually operated Arisaka bolt-action system with an internal magazine.
Collector Significance
The Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle represents a fascinating intersection of Japanese small-arms engineering and the specialized equipment developed for airborne warfare in the Pacific. Production was limited compared with conventional Type 99 rifles, and surviving examples with their important components intact are highly sought after.
This particular rifle combines several especially desirable characteristics:
- Original WWII Japanese Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle
- 7.7×58mm Japanese caliber
- Serial Number 7454
- Matching configuration
- Intact Imperial chrysanthemum (“Mum”)
- Original two-piece takedown/paratrooper design
- Folding anti-aircraft wings on rear sight
- Bolt-action military configuration
- Excellent overall condition
Condition
Excellent original condition. The rifle displays exceptionally well for an authentic WWII Japanese military arm and retains the important features that make the Type 2 so collectible. The matching-number configuration, intact Mum, specialized takedown mechanism, and complete anti-aircraft rear sight assembly make this an outstanding example for an advanced collection of Imperial Japanese weapons, WWII airborne equipment, Arisaka rifles, or Pacific War militaria.
