Description:
This is an original WW2 Japanese Order of the Rising Sun 8th Class medal. The 8th Class medal is often referred to by collectors as the ‘White Paulownia Medal’ or ‘Green/White Paulownia Medal’ due to the color of the ribbon and the design on the medal. The Order of the Rising Sun 8th Class medal is highly sought after by collectors for its historical significance, beauty, and the fact that it was awarded to the Japanese military during WW2. The Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji as the very first national decoration of Japan. It was one of the highest honors given by the Empire of Japan, and the 8th Class was the lowest award of the Order of the Rising Sun, given to enlisted men, junior NCOs, other junior military personnel, and civilians who had performed acts of bravery, or given service in a meritorious or exemplary manner. The front of the medal features the stylized representation of three Paulownia leaves with blossoms in the middle, the White Paulownia Medal. Each of the leaves is extremely detailed, and the whole medal is cast in high quality silver, a mark of quality of Japanese issued medals from this time. The reverse of the medal is stamped with four Japanese characters; ???? (Kun-k?-sei-sh?) which translates to “Medal for Meritorious Service” and are still very clearly visible. The medal is of silver and the triangular silk ribbon is in the original condition, in the 8th Class purple and white striped version. The reverse of the medal has the normal fixed attachment to allow for suspension from a uniform, i.e. a fixed pin or hook. Included is the original fitted presentation case. These cased examples are becoming scarcer by the day, especially complete and in such good condition as this example.
Historically the 7th and 8th Classes were officially disbanded by the Japanese government in 2003. WW2 era awards of this rank are of particular historical interest today and make a fantastic addition to any WW2 militaria, medal, or Japanese military collection. This would make an excellent addition to any WW2 militaria, medal, or Japanese military collection.
