Description:

This is an WW2 U.S. Bomber Crewmen 6513-1A Reserve Chest Pack Parachute that was issued in 1943 to an airman with his parachute log record book. Manufactured by M. Steinthal & Co.of NY in 1943. The log book shows 1 jump record that is dated and signed.

History:

The U.S. Army Air Forces issued this historical WWII-era Reserve Chest Pack Parachute model 6513-1A to American bomber crewmen in 1943. The 6513-1A Reserve Chest Pack Parachute served as a standard emergency parachute system for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators as well as other Allied bombers operating in European and Pacific theaters. The 6513-1A Reserve Chest Pack Parachute served as an essential lifesaving device which personnel wore on their chest for emergency parachute use. The parachute maintains its original khaki canvas pack which shows Army Air Forces nomenclature and contract number and inspection stamps. The pack uses its correct harness attachment hooks to connect to the D-rings of the airman's flight harness. The silk canopy inside the pack remains properly packed and preserved while the suspension lines are neatly stowed. The original Parachute Log Record Book accompanies the parachute to show the rigging and inspection and repack history of the parachute. The logbook contains dated entries which show the parachute was issued and maintained throughout 1943 while demonstrating the thorough maintenance procedures for vital equipment. The logbook contains the name of the airman who received the parachute which establishes a direct link to the serviceman who depended on it for survival. The reserve parachutes served gunners and radio operators and bombardiers and navigators because these personnel needed immediate parachute access when working in limited aircraft spaces. The 6513-1A reserve parachute allowed quick attachment to the front of the airman through its clip system which provided fast and flexible bailout options in emergency situations. The parachute and logbook combination provides an exceptional museum-grade artifact that shows the risks and bravery of World War II aircrew members who operated in enemy airspace.
