Description

This is an excellent example of an original U.S. WWII M3 6x30 field binocular set, manufactured in 1943 by the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation, a well-known wartime optics producer. The binoculars are clearly marked with the "M3" designation and carry the 1943 production date, making them a period-correct piece used extensively by U.S. infantry, artillery spotters, and other field personnel throughout World War II.

The binoculars retain their original finish with only minor handling wear consistent with age and service use. The optics remain clear, providing a crisp field of view with fully intact focusing mechanisms. Both eyecups are in excellent condition without cracks or damage.

This set comes complete with its original U.S. T.D. Boardman, M17 brown leather carrying case, which is in solid condition with functional buckles, closure straps, and original shoulder carry strap. The interior felt lining remains intact, offering continued protection for the binoculars.

This is a desirable and well-preserved example of U.S. military field gear from World War II, ideal for collectors of American militaria, battlefield equipment, or vintage optical instruments.

History

During World War II, the U.S. Army widely issued the M3 6x30 binoculars as standard field equipment for infantry, artillery spotters, and other frontline units. These binoculars provided essential magnification and field observation capabilities, significantly enhancing battlefield awareness and target acquisition.

The M3 6x30 binoculars were produced by several contractors under wartime contracts, with Nash-Kelvinator Corporation emerging as one of the key manufacturers. Nash-Kelvinator, a company more commonly associated with automotive and appliance production, quickly adapted to meet military optical needs during the war. Their M3 binoculars were known for their durable construction, clear optics, and reliability under harsh conditions.

The 6x30 specification indicates 6-power magnification with a 30mm objective lens, offering a good balance between magnification and a wide field of view—ideal for field use. These binoculars were typically finished in black or olive drab with a textured grip to ensure secure handling, even in wet or muddy environments.

This example is housed in its original M17 leather case, which was specifically designed to protect the binoculars during transport. The M17 case features a sturdy leather exterior, a hinged lid with a securing strap, and belt loops for easy field carry. The case provided crucial protection against dust, debris, and impact during combat operations.

Together, the Nash-Kelvinator M3 binoculars and the M17 leather case represent an essential piece of a U.S. soldier’s field gear during WWII. Surviving examples in good condition are highly collectible today, valued for their historical significance and practical design.
