Description
This is an Original World War II-era U.S. M69 Dummy Training Practice (TP) round, designed for use with the M2 and M19 60mm mortar systems. Manufactured specifically for training purposes, the M69 round is a completely inert, non-explosive version of the standard 60mm mortar shell used by American infantry during WWII.
History
The original World War II U.S. M69 Dummy Training Practice (TP) Round functioned as a training tool for M2 and M19 60mm mortar systems. The M69 served as an inert training round which enabled soldiers to practice mortar system loading and handling and firing procedures without the danger of actual ammunition. The M69 practice mortar shell replicated the dimensions and weight of live high-explosive (HE) mortar shells through its durable metal construction. The inert status of this round is indicated through black paint or distinctive markings on its solid body. The rounds served an essential role to teach combat procedures to troops through safe training sessions in both field environments and stateside instruction camps. The M69 practice mortar duplicated the M49 HE round in design to provide safe training accuracy while upholding safety standards. The base of the round included a dummy fin assembly while some versions displayed “M69 TP” markings along with manufacturer and lot codes. The inert condition of this artifact makes it safe for display or collection purposes while preserving its historical significance as a WWII U.S. Army training artifact. The artifact stands as an outstanding representation for those who collect WWII ordnance and training equipment as well as U.S. Army memorabilia.
