Description
This is an original World War II-era U.S. MkII fragmentation grenade, commonly known as the “pineapple” grenade due to its segmented cast iron body. This particular example represents the early-war configuration, painted in its original solid yellow factory finish—a color used briefly to designate high-explosive ordnance before the U.S. military shifted to using olive drab with yellow stenciling for better camouflage in combat environments.
The body features the distinctive segmented pattern intended to enhance fragmentation upon detonation, although the actual fragmentation performance varied. This inert example retains excellent casting details and is topped with an M10A2 fuze, the standard-issue time-delay fuze used during the middle years of WWII. The M10A2, introduced in 1943, featured improved reliability over earlier models and included a safety lever ("spoon") and pull ring assembly, mimicking the operational appearance of a live grenade.
Originally designed in the late 1910s and standardized in the 1920s, the MkII remained the primary U.S. hand grenade through most of World War II, before being phased out by the M26 series in the postwar years. This inert specimen is a fine example of early-war U.S. ordnance and is highly sought after by collectors due to its vibrant original yellow finish and wartime-era fuze combination.
