Description
This is an original World War II-era U.S. MkII Fragmentation Grenade fitted with the later-pattern M200A1 fuze, now rendered completely inert for display or collecting purposes.
The MkII grenade, often referred to as the "pineapple grenade" due to its segmented cast-iron body, was the standard fragmentation hand grenade used by American forces during World War II. Designed for anti-personnel use, its grooved surface helped both with gripping and fragmentation upon detonation. The MkII was widely issued to U.S. infantry and saw service in every major theater of the war.
This particular example is equipped with the M200A1 fuze, a later war and post-war modification designed to improve reliability and safety. The M200A1 is a pyrotechnic delay fuze and features a distinctive body shape with serrations for easy installation and removal. While earlier MkII grenades commonly used M10A2 or M10A3 fuzes, many were upgraded or refitted during and after the war with improved fuze assemblies like the M200A1.
The grenade retains its iconic segmented body with an olive drab green paint finish, typical of late-war examples. A yellow ring painted around the neck, though often faded or absent, would originally have indicated a high-explosive filler. This unit has been professionally demilitarized and is completely inert, making it safe and legal to own for historical collecting.
