Description

This is an original World War II-era U.S. MkII training “pineapple” grenade fitted with the M228 training fuze, fully inert and safe for display. The MkII fragmentation grenade was the standard-issue hand grenade used by American forces throughout WWII, known for its distinctive segmented cast-iron body, which aided in grip and fragmentation. This particular example features the classic MkII body, painted in the typical blue finish used to denote training ordnance. The blue paint signifies that this grenade was specifically produced for inert training purposes rather than live combat use. The body retains its molded fragmentation pattern and original finish, showing only minor wear consistent with period handling. It is fitted with an M228 training fuze, introduced during the later years of the war and widely used into the post-war period. The M228 fuze assembly mimicked the functioning of live fuzes but contained no explosive components. The spoon (safety lever) and pull ring remain intact, making this an outstanding and complete example. These training grenades were vital for safely instructing soldiers in proper throwing techniques and fuse operation without the danger of live detonation. They were commonly used at stateside military bases, training camps, and in preparation for combat deployment. A highly collectible piece of WWII U.S. military history, this inert MkII M228 training grenade is ideal for historical displays, reenactment collections, or educational exhibits focusing on the training and preparation of American GIs during the Second World War.
