History
This rare original World War II German identification tag, or Erkennungsmarke, is a remarkable and uncommon artifact attributed to the early Waffen-SS formations—specifically the SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT). The tag is stamped:
“S” V.T. 3./N808”, indicating:
- “” – Early stylized runic representation of the Schutzstaffel (SS), which predates standardized later-war numbering systems.
- “V.T.” – Abbreviation for Verfügungstruppe, the SS combat units that formed the nucleus of what would later become the Waffen-SS.
- “3./N808” – Denotes the 3rd Company, soldier number 808, of a specific early SS-VT unit (likely attached to a numerical training or replacement battalion).
Constructed from zinc alloy, which was typical for late 1930s to early-war SS tags, the tag remains in excellent condition for its age—showing field use yet retaining legible, deep-stamped markings on both halves. The disc features the standard oval shape with central perforation to allow for breaking in case of battlefield casualty identification.
This identification tag represents a scarce early-war Waffen-SS collectible, particularly due to the “V.T.” designation, which was used before the formal transformation of SS combat units into the Waffen-SS under Heinrich Himmler’s command structure. These early tags are highly sought after by collectors and historians alike due to their link with the elite and often controversial combat elements of Nazi Germany’s military machinery.
A powerful and rare relic from the formative years of one of World War II’s most infamous military organizations.
