Description:
An exceptional Third Reich German Kuban Shield (Kubanschild), Heer issue, awarded for participation in the fierce defensive operations in the Kuban bridgehead during 1943. This striking campaign shield remains in near mint condition, retaining excellent detail and finish throughout.
Historical Background
The Kuban Shield was officially instituted on September 21, 1943, by Adolf Hitler to commemorate service in the Kuban bridgehead (February–October 1943), where German and Axis forces held defensive positions against sustained Soviet offensives along the Taman Peninsula.
Awarded to members of the Heer (Army), Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine who met the required combat or service criteria, the shield was worn on the upper left sleeve of the field tunic, mounted to a wool backing matching the branch of service.
Heer examples, such as this one, were mounted on field-grey wool, distinguishing them from Luftwaffe (blue-grey) and Kriegsmarine (dark navy) backings.
Construction & Design
- Material: Bronzed magnetic metal
- Dimensions: 52.16 mm (w) x 61.62 mm (h)
- Obverse Details:
- Stylized relief map of the Kuban region
- Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika
- “KUBAN” inscription at the top
- Flanking date: 1943
The shield exhibits crisp die-struck detail, with sharp definition to the eagle, map contours, and lettering.
Reverse & Backing
- Secured by all four original attachment prongs
- Mounted to a correct field-grey wool backing (Heer issue)
- Retains its light brown paper backer
- Unmarked example, consistent with known production variants
The prongs remain intact and firmly affixed, indicating the shield has not been disturbed or reconfigured. The wool backing remains clean and well-preserved, with excellent structure and minimal age wear.
Condition
This Kuban Shield presents in near mint condition, retaining strong original bronzed finish and outstanding visual appeal. The field-grey wool liner is vibrant and structurally sound, and the paper backing remains securely in place.
A superb example of a late-war German campaign shield—ideal for the advanced collector seeking a high-quality Heer-issued Kubanschild with strong display presence and excellent preservation.
