Description:

This Original German Verwundetenabzeichen Wound Badge in Black.  This wound badge is a quality example, and is in good overall condition.

History:

The Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen) was a military decoration of Nazi Germany awarded to soldiers of the Wehrmacht, SS, and auxiliary forces who were wounded in combat. Originally established during World War I, it was re-instituted on 1 September 1939, at the onset of World War II.

Classification and Design: The badge came in three grades: black, silver, and gold—each indicating the severity or number of wounds sustained:

  • Black (3rd class): For one or two wounds.
  • Silver (2nd class): For three or four wounds or loss of a limb.
  • Gold (1st class): For five or more wounds or severe injuries such as blindness or disfigurement.

The Black Wound Badge was stamped from sheet metal and typically painted black. It features:

  • An oval-shaped medallion.
  • A German Stahlhelm (steel helmet) resting on a crossed pair of swords.
  • A laurel wreath surrounding the design.
  • The reverse was usually flat with a pin-back clasp.

Historical Context: The badge symbolized recognition of a soldier’s sacrifice and physical suffering. Despite being a Third Reich-era decoration, it is often studied today in the context of military history and the broader analysis of World War II awards and insignia.
