Description
Original M1 Garand American Fork Hoe (AFH) Rifle Bayonet + Scabbard dated 1940. This specimen is very well-made with crisp lines and a well-defined edge; ricasso is sharply stamped AFH / US “flaming bomb” on one side.This is the 10″-blade specimen NOT a cut-down of the older 16″ blade M1905. This M1 is in rare unused condition with the “parkerized” factory blade finish intact; this type is rare as such. This specimen is very well-made with crisp lines and a well-defined edge; ricasso is sharply stamped AFH / US “flaming bomb” on one side. M7 composition scabbard manufacture by Victory Plastics is marked with US “flaming-bomb” ordinance mark on the throat
History
The M1 Garand is a semi-automatic rifle that was used by the United States military during World War II and the Korean War. It is known for its distinctive "ping" sound when the en-bloc clip is ejected. The M1 Garand could be fitted with a bayonet for close-quarters combat.
The M1 Garand bayonet was designated the M1905E1 and was based on the M1905 bayonet used with the Springfield 1903 rifle. It had a 16-inch blade with a double-edged spear point and a blood groove. The blade was made of high carbon steel and had a blued finish. The handle was made of stacked leather washers and featured a steel pommel with a latch mechanism to attach it to the rifle's muzzle.
The scabbard for the M1 Garand bayonet was designated the M7. It was made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and had a metal throat and tip. The scabbard could be attached to the soldier's web belt for easy carrying. It also had a wire cutter attachment on the back.
