History
The M31 canteen was a standard-issue water canteen used by the German military during World War II. It was made of aluminum or steel and had a screw cap with a chain attached to it to prevent loss. The canteen was covered with a fabric or canvas cover to help insulate the contents and protect the canteen from the harsh desert environment. The cover usually had a strap for carrying the canteen. The canteen was made of metal, usually aluminum, and had a two-piece construction. It consisted of a larger outer shell and a smaller inner container with a screw-on cap. The canteen had a tan or olive drab color to blend with the desert environment of North Africa. The outer shell often featured a textured pattern to enhance grip and prevent the canteen from becoming too hot in the sun.
